You got a Christmas puppy. Now what?

Training your dog for the Holidays

The packages tied with ribbon and bows, the tinsel and stockings, and the roast beast are all but a faint memory.  The sweet little bundle of joy that was nestled beneath the tree Christmas morning is by now a barking menacing terror!

What to do?  Surely we cannot allow Max to become unruly.

Start by making a list of behaviors that you would like Max to learn, and then do some research about dog training and search for a reputable local dog trainer with experience in puppies and assistance in helping you reach your goals with your new dog.

I have been a dog trainer for more than a decade, and I never recommend getting a puppy as a gift, but we are now dealing with the menacing terror that is unexpectedly full of energy just two days after the blissful morning.

Training begins immediately and should be adjusted to the puppy’s age for proper retention.  Think of it like this; would you ask your toddler to solve an algebra problem? No you wouldn’t, so don’t expect Max to understand the leash that he is now attached too.

A good trainer will have the skills and knowledge to help you train your developing puppy so he learns skills properly and can advanced those skills as he ages.  Did you get a puppy that is a working breed?  Would you like to learn how to train your puppy to do what he was bred to for?  Keep these questions in mind when you are doing your research and interviewing trainers.

Some trainers offer board and train programs; this where you give your puppy to the trainer for a period of several weeks and they return your puppy to you trained.  Hopefully they have designed a well-rounded training program that includes; socialization, crate and potty training, age appropriate obedience training and manners.  I do not allow any puppy or dog for that matter, to enter my board and train program unless you have had that puppy or dog for 30 days.  This is to ensure bonding between you and your new puppy or dog.  When I am contacted by new puppy or dog owners I ask them how long they have had their dog and then I build them a training program based on several factors.

No one wants to be a Grinch on Christmas, so you gave in and bought that sweet puppy in the window for Christmas morning, you’ve got work to do!

Believe it or not your puppy can get bored!  How can that be?  My puppy has baskets full of toys in the house and outside.  I take my puppy on two walks a day and spend time with him in the evening.

When I’m asked to come to a client’s home to help them when their puppy has been chewing the furniture or is urinating from excitement or isn’t able to quiet down the first thing I observe is that there are too many choices.

Too many choices = boredom

I recommend just five toys and activities.  I have found that this keeps the puppy interested and keeps the family interested.  With all of the choices out there in the big box stores its no wonder we buy too much for our puppy.  We are sucked into the marketing skeem and the guilt ridden commercials with the cute and cuddlies with big brown eyes.  Truth be known, puppies will seek out items that feel good, taste good and make their teeth feel better.  They like chewing on the table legs and door jams because wood, although hard is also chewy and soft in a dog’s mouth offering just enough give when they sink their teeth in.  Puppies seek out shoes, socks, and other unmentionables because truth be known, they smell like us.

The following are the toys I recommend for medium to large breed dogs – remember a puppy will only entertain himself for so long.

1. Tennis ball or rubber ball of like size
2. Soccer ball – size 3 slightly deflated (outside)
3. Stuffable treat toys like KONG
4. Frisbee made from material, hard plastic can hurt their mouths
5. Dog safe stuffed toy with rope

I also recommend that you incorporate obedience training into your games with your puppy.  This challenges them and makes the playtime more interactive.

Every Dog Has Its Day- Toby the Service Dog

Since Toby has been home he has been participating in private training classes as well as Canine Good Citizen group classes.  Toby is working with his handler, Shauna and has been taken on many field trips.

Shauna took Toby to the mountains where he behaved like a 6 month old puppy but remembered he did need to perform his commands and do his job.   She has taken him on short trips to the grocery store and other shopping excursions.  There are times when he is less well behaved than others.  This is too be expected due to his age.

Toby technically is practicing and learning to be a great psychiatric service dog.  He is performing his job far beyond other dogs his age.  Toby already grasps and understands his purpose – and is teaching his handler how he communicates and recognizes her highs and lows and is alerting her to those situations and she is beginning to recognize that sometimes when she has thought Toby was misbehaving he was really trying to distract her from her own thoughts.

Toby will be doing his last private class for sometime as we are advancing him to public access training.

Never Forget Your Dreams

About a decade ago unbeknown to me dogs would change my life.  At the time I owned two Alaskan Malamutes and I was recently widowed and newly a single mother of three very young children.  My Malamute’s were just pets – great pets, who loved my children and wanted nothing more than to be by their side.

My good friend who just so happened to run Siberian Huskies in mid-distance dog sled races, which I knew nothing about, decided to come to Colorado and give Sprint mushing a try and to expand his kennel, Trafalgar K9.  I knew a little bit about training and a little bit about breeding dogs, I knew nothing about harnessing, lining out, or dog sledding at all.

Within two months Robert and I had gathered about a dozen ragamuffin Siberian Huskies who had been in harness but let’s just say were not quite third string team members.  Robert showed the kids and I a whole new world.  We did things that we had never done before.

Never Forget Your Dreams – was discovered by us one day while traveling to a dogsled race in South Dakota – it has become our families motto and we have given countless people the opportunity to find and follow their dreams through training their dogs to be the best they can be.

After a decade of waiting and growing together as a family – Robert is finally getting back on track and following his dream.  While Robert prepares for running the Iditarod in 2013 – I am reminded that he originally was preparing to run the last great race in 2003.  He has patiently waited while our children have grown and while I’ve taken myself down a different career path just to return to the dogs.

I am very proud of my best friend for never forgetting his dream and more importantly for standing by my side while I developed my own dreams.

In light of the recent fire, I’d like to remind you to prepare an emergency evacuation plan for your pets and/or livestock.  In times like this moving quickly is key. I have submitted articles in the past about the importance of having an emergency preparedness plan for your pets.

Remember to have water, food, and any necessary medications handy and ready to go.  Also, keep a airline rated crated nearby as this can assist in keeping your pet safe in an emergency.  Keep your pets records and identification in a water proof container secured to his crate and have a copy for yourself.

Evacuation centers have been set up at the North Boulder Recreation Center, the Nederland Community Center and New Vista High School in Boulder. The Boulder County Fairgrounds is set up to accept large animals that were evacuated and the Longmont Humane Society is also taking in some animals. Courtesy of KUNC

Fido, Get in Shape!

Every autumn Denver Dog Works offers a wonderful training class.  It’s a spinoff of their regular full eight week obedience lessons with group class downsized for busy families and the budget minded.

Fido needs to go back to school along with the kids why not give Denver Dog Works a try and enroll him in a four week course to get Fido back on track from a relaxing summer vacation.

Here’s how it works; give Michele a call and explain two or three things that you’d like to work on with Fido and she will pair you with an appropriate trainer to address your requests and to match your scheduling needs.  You will be given four classes and once finished you will receive a recommendation for further classes or be given the opportunity to take an obedience test. Classes are available every weeknight at the training center which boasts an 800-square foot rubber training floor making training comfortable for both you and Fido after a long day at work.

An example request; Fido pulls on the leash and lunges when we approach people and people with dogs, can you help?  Of course, we can help your training will include outdoor leash work with controlled situations with other dogs and people.

Remember these classes are designed to deal with a couple of your specific complaints, it’s not a full obedience course, but if you are interested in a full obedience course Michele can make that happen for you as well.

Practice With Your Pup!

At Denver Dog Works we have training programs for your brand new puppy to your mature dog. We have an evaluation process and during this process your personalized training program is designed for you, your family, your lifestyle, and your dog.

We offer private obedience classes, board and train programs, Canine Good Citizen courses, specialized classes designed to meet specific issues or goals, sport training, and Peak Performance.

We offer two group classes; Canine Good Citizen for puppies and for dogs six months and older, and we offer a drop in group class for clients as an incentive for taking full obedience classes, board and trains, or Peak Performance.

We do not offer group classes for obedience or socialization.  We have found that dogs learn better in one on one private classes and work their way into group classes once the training relationship between the dog and the owner has been established.

The key to successful dog training is practice.  If you can’t devote 30 minutes to your dog to train each day, break it up and do a few minutes here and there.  It enriches your relationship with your dog.

Dogs are Not Disposable

Dogs have been our companions for over 3000 years.  We have asked them to not only watch over us while we sleep but to help us survive and throughout history humans and canines have learned to not only co-exist but to rely on one another for the betterment of both species.

In 2010, dogs have come to our sides as our companions but more recently we humans, have incorporated our canine companions to take the place of our children filling a void or a desire to care for something each and every day.  While this is acceptable and dogs are more and more likely not to perform what they were initially bred and designed to do for us, I am perplexed at the notion that we humans still consider our best friends as personal property and even worse as disposable.

In my line of work, I train dogs to perform what they were bred and designed to do.  Yes I train dogs as companions and wonderful pets, but I bred and train service dogs and sled dogs.  Service dogs provide the highest level of companionship, warmth, and desire to make our lives better in whatever way they can.

I have written before about service dogs and their importance and simply about the definition of a service dog.

When a disabled person contacts me and requests a service dog, I do whatever I can to match a specific dog to their personality and their needs so that ultimately there is a good bond from the moment they meet.  This unfortunately isn’t always the best route.  In other words, any dog I have trained will perform the duties necessary to any handler they are with.

Recently, I placed one of my psychiatric service dogs with a new client.  From the beginning the training and bonding process was compromised.  Too many adjustments and not enough desire by the handler to even work with the dog or let the dog work for them and after just 90 days I have decided to do something I have never been asked to do nor have I even considered doing it – I have pulled the dog back from this handler and I have placed him back into intensive training to re-prepare him for a handler who not only needs him but will work with him.

If you or someone you know is in need of a service dog to assist you in returning back to work, school, or even just getting back to normalcy please take into consideration that we take steps in making the transition as to not overwhelm or make the process too fast.  A psychiatric service dog means freedom in just as many ways to his handler as a mobility service dog means to a disabled person in a wheelchair.

I pride my service dog business on the fact that we do not require an application process nor is there a waiting period.  I have tried to make obtaining a service dog a dignified process rather than another degrading process that the handler must go through.

Dogs are not disposable.  Whatever you get a dog for take the pledge and be responsible for your dog for his/her lifetime and weather the good and bad.  You wouldn’t drop off your child at a shelter because it wasn’t a good fit!
